NM Delegation Stands Up for Our Environment and Our Families’ Health

Albuquerque, NM  —  Today, Environment New Mexico released its federal scorecard evaluating how the New Mexico congressional delegation has voted when it comes to supporting clean air, clean water and other environmental protections. Absences count against a member’s score. State Director Sanders Moore released the following statement:

“The country is terribly polarized these days on all sorts of issues, including the need to protect our environment. It shouldn’t be this way, it didn’t used to be, and I’m pleased to say that in the New Mexico delegation, we’re nearly unanimous when it comes to our air and water.

“Overall, the U.S. Senate got only a score of 48% and the U.S. House of Representatives scored just 45%, which does not bode well for our air or water. Here in NM our two senators voted for the planet 100 percent of the time and our house delegation averaged 68 percent — amongst the most environmental leaders in the Congress. Unfortunately, Rep. Steve Pearce voted with us three percent of the time.

“We in the Land of Enchantment can be especially proud that four members in both branches voted with us 100 percent of the time, which means our planet and our families are represented by a lot of real environmental champs.

“Environment New Mexico was proud to present Sen. Martin Heinrich with our 2017 Environmental Champion award for his stellar environmental voting record.

“New Mexico voters have true champions in Washington, D.C. when it comes to standing up  for our air and water and families. Here’s hoping our delegation continues to show strong and effective leadership and works to encourage the entire Congress to support the core environmental values so many of us share.”
